Where's Akka?
Hello Fellow Flushers,
You might have been wondering, where was Akka during the Filament arc of "Mother," "Hunt" and "Flowers"? Akka was on a mission calling for back up for Lilliput. Ready to read Akka's solo mission?
In the deep levels of the sewers, communication is non-existent. No walkie talkies, cell phones or emails for our brave sewer workers. Filter Workers have on-board computers to log communications. When they get to data hubs, communication lines back to MSD, they broadcast messages.
Akka uses a mini flash drive around her neck to transfer Lilliput's message to data hubs.
In "Mother,:" Lilliput has located the filaments and needs back up. Lilliput needs Akka to deliver her SOS to MSD.
That's the beginning of "Messenger pt. 1." In this two part arc, we get to expand the MeSseD universe and tell a different kind of story. We have guest artist Clint Basinger illustrating Akka’s adventure getting caught between poisonous centipedes and massive tubifex worms.
In Season 1, Chapter 2 "Garden Graveyard," Clint did the two page back up story "Fauna," which is reprinted for your entertainment in "Messenger pt.1." He did an amazing design on the centipede. I was motivated to bring them back starting with the injured centipede-in-need, Footsie.
We get the return of the Tubifex worms from Season 1, Chapter 1 "Choke." To Lilliput, the worms were a handful, to Akka, they are towering giants.
In my mind, Akka is my Wolverine. She's wild, fiercely loyal, ready to scrap and burly. Messenger pt 1 and 2 shows us that Akka is not a pet and more of a partner.
Messenger was an interesting challenge. One of my favorite comics growing up was GI Joe #21, "Silent Interlude." This sweet story occurs with no word balloons, allowing the art to take center stage and tell the tale. With no translation of centipede, worms or rats, the majority of Messenger has no word balloons.
