Bringing the Page to Life:
The "Three-Panel Action" Workshop Hits the Road!
There is something magical about the space between comic book panels—the "gutter"—where the reader’s imagination takes flight. For the past several months, the Cincinnati Arts Association’s (CAA) Artists on Tour program has been helping us bring that magic directly to classrooms across the Tri-State OINK (Ohio, Indiana, and Northern Kentucky) region.
We’ve had an incredible time sharing the craft of sequential art with students, and we wanted to share a bit about what we’re doing and why we love this program.

MAKE COMICS!
The Workshop: Three-Panel Action
Our flagship session, "Three-Panel Action: Storytelling with Comics," is a deep dive into the discipline of visual narrative. While many people think they need hundreds of pages to tell a story, we challenge students to master the "Three-Panel" format. Curriculum Focus: Visual Art & Narrative Literacy Recommended Grades: 5–12
The Experience: We guide students through essential techniques, from character blocking to dialogue placement, showing them how to craft a compelling beginning, middle, and end within a tight, rhythmic structure.
Whether a student is a seasoned illustrator or a self-proclaimed "doodler," they walk away with a finished piece of art and a new understanding of how to communicate ideas visually.

On the Road: Recent Stops
The energy in these middle and high school classrooms has been electric. Our first tour, we had the pleasure of teaching at:
Batesville Middle School
Campbell County Middle School
Withrow High School
Watching students realize that they have the power to create their own heroes and tell their own stories is the most rewarding part of the job.

Why Artists on Tour Matters
Having worked alongside the Cincinnati Arts Association in various capacities over the years, we’ve seen firsthand how vital this infrastructure is for the local arts ecosystem.
For an artist, the biggest hurdles to teaching are often administrative—marketing the workshops to schools, managing schedules, and handling payment collection. The CAA staff handles the heavy lifting, allowing us to focus entirely on what we do best: creating and teaching. They are the bridge that connects professional artists to the next generation of creators.
